While we’ve come to know Noble Johnson as president of the Lincoln Motion Picture Co. and brother of George Johnson in our exhibition, he is actually most known for his work in mainstream film. Working in over 140 films, his acting career spanned more than thirty years. Some of Noble’s most notable films are “King Kong” (1933), "The Mummy" (1932), and “The Most Dangerous Game” (1932). However, he was often cast into “ethnic” roles such as “The Indian,” “The Islander,” “Cannibal King,” and other caricatures of non-White peoples. The roles often required heavy make-up and Noble was a skilled make-up artist, often doing his own make-up. Remarkably talented and handsome, Noble had a unique and successful career as a Black actor.
